History of the Home
In 1955 it was decided that the Ladies Orange Lodge of
Ontario West should have a project large enough to involve all its
members, thereby keeping their interest up. A Retirement Home was agreed
upon and "Bricks" were sold to raise the money for it. The first "Brick"
was sold to a visitor from the United States and the project was
underway.
In 1967 enough money had been raised to begin construction and the sod
was turned in June, 1967. 0rillia was selected as the site for it, being
centrally located. The land was sold to the Lodge by its owners for the
sum of $1.00 In 1969, a 72 bed Retirement Home was officially opened at
12 Grace Ave., Orillia. It was called The Trillium Home, operated by the
L.O.B.A. of Ontario West.
As time went on, and the residents required nursing care, it was
eventually turned into a Nursing Home, as no one wanted to turn the
residents out. This of course meant hiring nurses and gradually they
became unionized. Some aspects of running the Home were beyond the
capabilities of the Ladies on the Board of Directors, so an invitation
went out to the Men's Lodges and a 10 member Board of Directors was
formed consisting of 5 ladies and 5 men. This worked quite well.
However in 1989, what with union demands and government restrictions, it
was decided to sell the Home to the County of Simcoe. An Apartment
Building at 20 Neywash St., Orillia was purchased with a portion of the
funds from the sale, so that we could continue to help the elderly or
low income families, but the Bulk of the funds were invested and all
interest from these investments are donated to various charities each
year.
In order to retain our Charitable Organization Registration donations to
the Board are necessary. These are chiefly made in the form of Memorials
in the name of departed members, which are added to our yearly donations
to charity.
